Last weekend we were unsurprised to learn that Spain was going to have a festival where they dangerously used fire in celebration.  This time we had to travel down to Valencia to see it, about a 4 hour trip from Barcelona.  We found a cheap and convenient bus to take us there and back, and arrived in the city at about 4pm, only 2 hours after schedule, which isn't too bad for Spain.  We got the opportunity to see the futuristic science museum from the outside and met some of the nicest people I have met while in Spain.  Later we made our way to the center of the city, and were disappointed to not find anywhere serving the paella Valencia is famous for.  But after eating bravas and other tapas and walking around some more, we eventually started running into fallas, or huge structures made out of paper, all over the streets.  It was a bit difficult to know where we were going in the unfamiliar city, but it was still a very cool experience.  We saw a bunch of fallas, from small ones as big as me to the most intricate ones which were as big as the buildings.  At the end of the night the burnings began.  Groups spend thousands of dollars and all year building the fallas to have them burned on this night.  The one we watched was almost as tall as the buildings on all four sides, and I'm still shocked it managed not to collapse on the building or the surrounding people, as it went up in flames right there in the middle of the intersection.  It was unreal and so cool, just one more thing that would never be allowed in the U.S., and one more thing I'm glad to have experienced before leaving Spain.
