I can’t believe that I will be in Barcelona in less than a week! My flight leaves O’Hare in four days, and I haven’t even packed yet… I’ve been so busy with work, filling out forms for med school, and seeing friends that winter break flew by! I’ve been looking forward to this semester since freshman year, but it still doesn’t feel like it’s really happening. It’s a little scary to realize that I’m leaving IWU’s tiny campus where I know almost everyone, am surrounded by friends, and occupy every minute of my time with some club meeting, band rehearsal, or sorority function, but I’m not nearly as scared as I expected to be. I thought study abroad would be terrifying, but I’m so eager to go that my excitement completely outweighs the few lingering fears. Yeah, I’ll have to meet new people and find new ways to fill my time, but I think I’ll actually enjoy that. Yeah, I’ll miss my friends and family, but I can still contact them, and it’s not like I’m leaving them forever. Everyone at IWU starts classes tomorrow and while it’s weird not to be going back with them, words can’t even describe how excited I am for the amazing adventures that I’ll have in Spain!

Over the last 3 weeks I’ve spent most of my evenings flipping through travel books of Barcelona and deciding exactly what I want to do when I get there. I have lists of museums to visit, architecture to admire, soccer (or should I say, football) games to see, and food to eat. I think it would take me years to do everything I want to do in Spain, so we’ll see how much I can fit in during the next four months (I keep forgetting that I do actually have classes to take there). More than anything I can’t wait to be completely immersed in the culture—to speak Spanish every chance I get, to listen to Spanish music, to eat Spanish food, and, of course, to see how much more exciting an FC Barça game is at Camp Nou than it is on my basement tv. I can’t wait to explore the city and make it my home, to get to know and become a part of my host family, and, hopefully, to discover a little bit more about myself in the process.
