Prior to today, I was so excited to visit Camp Nou with my Sports and Society class. So waking up this morning was not a difficult task. I practically jumped out of bed, had my clothes on and was outside the apartments, ready to walk to school before anyone else was up. The metro ride was not bad either, although I did find out that metros and skirts do not make a good combination.

When my class and I arrived outside of the futbol stadium, my very first thought was how it reminded me of Qualcomm Stadium back in San Diego. It felt familiar and comforting, like it was home. For a person who does not follow any form of sport that is saying a lot.

The FC Barcelona merchandise store looked busy already and it was only 10:30 in the morning. Who knows what time people waited for the gates to open? With the electronic tour guides swung around our necks, we were ready to go. Separately from the class, I walked through their museum to see plaques of important figures of Barcelona futbol, commemorative memorabilia and a great number of trophies that rose high to the ceiling. One of the coolest things I saw were the various touch screen monitors that displayed different facts about Barcelona futbol players and games throughout history.

Disappointingly, the taste of Barcelona futbol turned sour when I approached the Barca field and found it colored in brown rather than green. There were two tractors restructuring the field so that new grass could be put in. I understand that the task needs to be done, but they couldn’t do it when fans and tourists weren’t around? I mean, the main purpose is to see the field as it is on game day not the process it takes to get there. It was definitely a bitter feeling to stand in the midst of Barca glory and imagine how beautiful the field must have been instead of being surrounded by its exquisiteness. I then made my way onto the reporters’ quarters up at the top boxes of the stadium. Although the view from the top was spectacular, nothing was able to make up for my inability to see Camp Nou in its entirety.
