First Weekend in Barcelona

This Friday we went on a day trip to Tarragona and got to stop at the beach there. We had the rest of the weekend free to explore or do anything we wanted to.

Well, the first weekend in Barcelona is coming to an end and it had quite a lot to offer. Friday we took a day trip to Tarragona, which was amazing! It took about an hour to get there, and then we went on a tour of the city. There are some beautiful and amazing things to be seen there including ruins of the Roman city that was once there. I found this very fascinating and really enjoyed the tour. After we finished, we went to a restaurant to have lunch. The food was great and a very large portion, but that's okay with me! It was also very fun and I got to meet some more of the people from the program who are all really nice. After eating we went to see a cool statue of the human towers, which are called "castell", and took some fun pictures. Then it was to the beach! The beach in Tarragona was beautiful. We stayed for a little over an hour but everyone would have stayed longer if we had the time. I strongly recommend anyone who is near Barcelona to make the trip to Tarragona; it's well worth it!

What's a weekend without a little going out right? Friday night I went out with a few girls from the program to the club's by the beach and got to experience some of the nightlife in Barcelona. It was similar to what I was expecting, but of course there were some surprises. Since the metro closes at 2:00 A.M and doesn't open again until 5:30 A.M, we planned to be out until we could catch the metro, and let me tell you, I don't know how people can do this every weekend! My roommates and I didn't get back to our house until about 6:00, and although we were planning to see La Sagrada Familia at 11:00 the next morning, we didn’t make it out of bed until around 2:30 in the afternoon. So, in order to not waste the entire day, I explored the neighborhood I live in.

Today was free museum day so I wanted to take advantage of this and make it to a few museums, however I was only able to make it to The Museum of Music. I was very happy I made the choice of seeing this one because it was filled with all sorts of different instruments from different ages and different areas of the world. I really enjoyed reading about the different instruments and learning some of the history, and also just getting to see instruments ranging from a very long time ago up until the 60's and 70's and some later. After I left the museum, I made the walk over to La Sagrada Familia. I wasn't able to go in because I didn't bring enough money with me, so I will most definitely be going back to go inside; but even the outside is magnificent. From there I got on the metro to go to the National Museum of Cataluña Art, unfortunately it was already closed. I decided to go for a walk around this area and took some really beautiful pictures in a park right next to the museum. Overall, my first weekend in Barcelona went great! It's not over yet either, I am about to head over to meet the group at Montjuic to see the Magic Fountain. This should be very beautiful, and was on my list of things to see. Hasta luego.
